Canning’s History
Canning was built in 1954 by Cochrane & Sons of Selby. She was made for Alexandra Towing Co. Ltd.
She was the first purpose built oil burning steam tug for the company. She is also one of the last steam tugs built.
She was based at Liverpool until 1966 when she moved to Swansea.
She was the last steam tug operating in the Bristol Channel.
1967
June: Towing cruise liner Nevasa.
1968
Towing Rowanmore.
In December 1974 she was sold to Swansea City Council for preservation.
2025
In 2025 The Steam Boat Trust started working with Swansea Council to restore Canning to working order.
2026
Work on Canning progresses well.
